A Picture Worth 1000 Words

Cutting the Evidence

“Gomes, get a look at this. A seventeen year old girl disappears the same day a fifteen year old girl disappears… just two days ago,” Emma pointed put.
“Any more info?” Gomes inquired.
“Nope, that’s it. Think we should get a look?”
“Let’s go. Stephan, drop your things; we have a new case.” Detective Gomes, boss of Emma, Stephan, and the rest of the agency, has been solving mysteries for twenty years now. They work at the Central Evidence Orginization and he has never failed at solving any case. Emma and Stephan have been partners ever since they were promoted. Jess and Dr. Smith run the lab back in the agency. There is never a day where they don’t have a case to solve. There is always something to do. The team had just finished solving a murder case. Now, they were off solving their next mystery.
The crew had just arrived at the fifteen year old’s house. It was an apartment on the first floor, Stephan rang the door bell. No one answered. After three tries, Stephan gave up. “They don’t seem to be home,” Stephan said. He kicked open the door and entered the apartment. The crew reached the dark brown door with the number twenty seven that was entitled on it. Once again, thinking no one would open the door, Stephan kicked the door open.
The place was a complete mess. The living room, a small area which consisted of a small T.V., a table, and two couches, had varies items on the floor, from old books to clothes. It looked like a hurricane blew in. A small portion of the kitchen was visible from where detective Gomes was standing. It was the complete opposite of how the living room was arranged. It was spotless. A young boy about the age of eighteen was seated on the chair next to the table. He got up and angrily asked, “Who the hell are you? How did you get in?”
“I’ll ask the questions. Why didn’t you open the door?” Gomes asked.
“The door bell’s broken. I didn’t know,” said the boy, a little nervous. He was taken to the agency to be questioned.
He sat in the cold chair, not saying a word. You could tell he was a bit frightened. Across him was Gomes. About five minutes had passed and no one said a word. Gomes broke the silence. “Who are you and how are you related to Amy?”
After a few seconds he answered, “My name’s Jeremy. I’m Amy’s big brother.” By the look on Gomes’ face, he already knew that. “She’s been missing for two days.”
“Do you have any idea where she is or where she might have gone?” asked Gomes.
“I have no clue. She’s never run off like that, but she’s old enough; she’ll come back.”
“Does anyone else live with you?”
“Yea, my mom, but she’s not home. She hasn’t been home for a week. She’s on a business trip in Seattle. I didn’t tell her that Amy’s gone missing. She’s supposed to come back tomorrow,” said Jeremy.
“Why didn’t you tell your mom about Amy? I mean don’t you think she should be informed about all of this?”
“I didn’t want to worry her. I’ll tell her when she comes back.”
“I’m afraid she already knows,” Gomes said slyly. It was clear that Jeremy was confused as well as Emma and Stephan, who were behind the glass window listening to the conversation. “Well I guess that’s it for now. Thank you, Jeremy for coming in.” Jeremy left after a short while.
While detective Gomes came out of the investigation room, Emma asked, “When did you tell the mother?” Gomes just smiled and left without answering. Stephan came out and stood my Emma. “I don’t get it, Stephan. How did Gomes contact the mother?”
“You know Bates; he’s full of surprises,” Stephan said smiling. Emma and Stephan caught up with detective Gomes.
Gomes turned and said,” Next stop, Caroline.” The address on the paper was only a couple of streets down. As they reached the address, the crew saw many cars parked in the driveway. Stephan, once again, knocked on the door. After just two knocks a woman about the age of thirty opened the door. It was obvious that she had been crying for a very long time; her eyes were blood red. “We’re from the CEO ma’am we have a few questions to ask you.”
“I’m Amy’s mom. Is this about Caroline?” The young woman appeared really frightened.
“It’s okay Mrs. Ray; everything will be alright. We’re going to figure all this out,” said Emma calmingly. The only thing we got from that questioning is that Caroline was really upset for the past week. She had just broken up with her boyfriend and his sister was threatening to kill her. It didn’t seem like a big deal at first but her mom said his sister was trying to hurt her. Mrs. Ray told her daughter to stay near a teacher when in school.
“So the seventeen year old knows the brother of the fifteen year old. Amy was threatening to kill Caroline, Jeremy’s ex-girlfriend, and both of the girls disappear the same and around the same time,” Gomes said. “We might have ourselves a kidnapping case, and possibly a murder.”
“Right on it boss.” While they were getting more information from the neighbors and friends, the phone rang. Mrs. Ray picked up the phone. She first hesitated to pick up but she eventually answered. She didn’t say anything at first. A couple of seconds later Mrs. Ray started to scream. “Who is it? Is it Caroline?” Emma inquired.
“Yes, yes it is. Caroline, honey, where are you? Are you alright?” Mrs. Ray was scared but at the same time relieved that Caroline was alive. Gomes told Mrs. Ray to keep talking. Gomes and the crew were planning on tracking down the call. Stephen set everything up. After a few minutes they tracked the call down to an old building that was probably once a factory. Mrs. Ray kept the conversation going for about three minutes. That was more than enough time.
Gomes asked Mrs. Ray to stay home and pick up any calls that she got. Caroline might call again and someone needed to be there to pick up. He asked her to contact him if she found out more information on Caroline. The team was headed for the old building.
The building was seventeen stories high. Once they got there they called the FBI to surround the building to make sure no one gets in or out. The three went inside to check up on everything. They started looking for Caroline on the first floor and made their way to the last floor. There was no trace of anyone. The building was checked once more, this time starting from the top floor to the first floor. “Hmm, looks like no one has been here for ten years. I wonder if there’s a basement…”
“That’s it! Good job Emma,” Gomes said, snapping his fingers.
“Uh, thanks,” Emma replied, not having a clue on what Gomes was talking about. Gomes led Emma and Stephan to a slightly open door labeled “Storage”. A shabby staircase could be seen through the open door. Gomes went down first; Emma followed him and Stephan stayed back to guard the door. The storeroom was very big; half of it was full with all the supplies that were left behind. “Over there,” Emma pointed to the closed door in the back of the room. Emma walked over carefully to the door. She wasn’t sure whether to open the door or not. Gomes tried to open it, but it was locked. They heard noises inside the door. There was obviously someone in there.
“Who is it? Get out of here!” said the loud girl like voice. Emma kicked the door open. There was a girl with a knife in her hand. It was dark, but the silhouette of a girl could be seen. She was pointing the knife to Gomes.
“Put the knife down. We won’t hurt you. Just put the knife down,” Emma said soothingly. The girl didn’t budge. “You think that’s the older one?” Emma whispered to Gomes.
“I don’t know. We’ll find out.” After that, everything happened so suddenly. The girl jumped on the table in the middle of the room and out the window. Gomes alerted the FBI surrounding the building and Emma informed Stephan, who was still guarding the storage door, that they found a girl in the room in the back. Stephan came down to help Emma find evidence related to the case. Gomes ran after the girl. Because of the darkness, it was very hard to notice anything. The only sources of light were the two windows.
Emma got her flashlight out while Stephan searched for evidence. Blood could be seen everywhere but it was leading to a tall cabinet in the corner of the room. Emma angled the flashlight so that it pointed to what was behind the cabinet. “Looks like we got a murder case,” Stephan said as he took a picture of the victim that was covered in blood.
“Stephan, come here. I found something. Looks like a hand.”
“But the body isn’t missing a hand.”
“I think it was the girl who ran away… Come on, let’s get out of here.”
When Stephan and Emma arrived at the agency they spotted Gomes, who seemed like he was sin a rush. “The girl that was in the building was Amy. The body was identified as Caroline. Let’s go; Amy’s being taken care of in the ambulance outside in the parking lot. When they got to the ambulance, Amy was being bandaged up. Emma started asking questions instantly. “Why did you murder Caroline? What did you have against her?”
“I didn’t mean it to go this far. I’m sorry I just didn’t want her to hurt my brother again,” Amy confessed.
“So you killed her…Why did you cut your hand off?” Emma inquired.
“I thought that if I cut both my hands off then I wouldn’t get caught. But before I could cut my other hand you guys came. I thought the only way anyone would catch me is if they check the finger prints on Caroline’s body,” Amy admitted.
“You’re really lucky that you were saved in time. You could have died if the blood kept on flowing...Okay so we’ll talk to you in the hospital. You need to get checked up.” The ambulance drove away and another case was solved.

Jeopardy Blog Post

Top 10 flaws

  1. Most of the groups were not able to control the room.
  2. In some of the presntations the slides were not working. The game would have gone smoother if this was not a problem.
  3. The rules for a couple of presentations were not clear. This caused a lot of confusion.
  4. The teams were sometimes uneven and not fair. For example, in one of the presentations the teams were broken down into two groups and one of the teams had more people. That gave them an advantage.
  5. The players were rude. When it was another team's turn to answer other teams would shout out random answers.
  6. The point system was also sometimes unfair and at the same time a bit confusing. When one team answered a question wrong they would get points off but when another team answered a question wrong they sometimes would not get any pints off.
  7. When giving out the prizes people were out of control. It should have been more orginized. The presenters should have gave out the prizes themselves.
  8. Some of the questions were unclear. The answers to some questions were not clear or wrong.
  9. Teams often cheated. They should have gotten points taken away but did not.
  10. Some of the questions were in the wrong category. Some were also not worth their point value.

Whose presentation did you like the best - please explain in a paragraph why?
I liked Joe's and Olivia's presentation the best. They kept the room under control. The prizes were distributed by themselves which made it more orginized. Their rules were most clear and their questions were appropriate for the amount of points given.

Which Group asked the toughest questions in your opinion
Emiel & Angelo. Their questions were not relevent to the categories. It was mostly about themselves.

What would you change in your presentation if you had a chance to do it again?
I would change the point system because people complained that the some easy questions were worth more than the harder ones. The rules were not clear so i would also change those. I wouljd also do other things to keep the teams under control.

What was your favorite prize? Which group brought that prize in?
I liked the brownies and cookies that Devon and Alley brought in.
